Open Role

Senior Software Architect & Principal Engineer

RemoteFull-timeSalary Range + Equity

About Us

We're building a clinical-grade sleep intelligence platform that doesn't exist yet. One that combines AI, wearable data, and evidence-based medicine to address what is arguably the most neglected pillar of human health. We've spent 18 months in development with a team of sleep scientists, engineers, and clinicians. We're backed by Khosla Ventures. And we're getting ready to launch something we believe can genuinely change outcomes for people who've been failed by the current system

About the Role

This is a foundational engineering hire. You'll serve as Senior Software Architect and Principal Engineer. You'll own the full-stack architecture, make binding technology decisions, and be the primary point of technical accountability. You'll work directly with our founder, core team, and development partners to take us from current state through public launch and beyond. But this role isn't just about technical ability. We need someone who genuinely believes that technology can transform health outcomes at scale. Someone who understands that we're not building a consumer app; we're building a clinical intervention that happens to be delivered through software. Someone who cares deeply about getting this right because real people's sleep, mental health, and quality of life will depend on what we build. The pace is intense. The responsibility is significant. But if the idea of building something that genuinely matters - something that could help millions of people sleep better and live healthier lives - resonates with you, we should talk.

What You'll Do

Platform Architecture

Design and own the end-to-end system architecture across multiple integrated product surfaces.

Architect data ingestion, normalization, and processing pipelines that handle heterogeneous inputs from third-party APIs and transform them into a unified internal schema.

Build and maintain the complete backend infrastructure from data intake through ML processing to consumer-facing output.

Design the product’s commercial architecture, including access tiers, feature gating, and monetization systems.

ML/AI Infrastructure

Architect the serving infrastructure for multiple proprietary ML models operating in both batch and real-time modes.

Work directly with data scientists to operationalize research-grade algorithms into production-grade, scalable inference pipelines.

Implement AI-powered consumer-facing features with natural language interaction.

Regulated Health Systems

Build the infrastructure required to operate within a regulated health environment, including secure data exchange with external medical systems and compliance with federal health data regulations.

Implement the technical systems required for licensed medical professionals to operate safely and compliantly within the platform.

Architect compliance workflows for controlled and regulated processes, including monitoring, audit, and reporting requirements.

Security & Compliance

Implement HIPAA-compliant data handling across all data flows, with encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access controls, and full audit trails.

Build breach notification systems and ensure SOC 2 readiness.

Ensure data isolation and regulatory compliance across multi-tenant deployments.

Team & Vendor Leadership

Serve as the primary technical interface with our design team, owning the API contract and ensuring architectural integrity.

As the team grows, hire, mentor, and lead backend engineers, data engineers, ML engineers, and DevOps/cloud engineers.

Make binding technology stack decisions and document architectural rationale for technical due diligence.

Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation.

Partner & Enterprise Integration

Design and build deployment capabilities for enterprise and institutional partners.

Architect integration points for strategic partners across adjacent industries.

Stay current with sleep science research

What We're Looking For

Required

10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years in a senior, lead, or principal architect role.

Deep full-stack expertise: you can architect cloud infrastructure AND write production code AND review a junior engineer’s PR with equal fluency.

Production experience building and scaling data-intensive backend systems — data pipelines, API services, ML model serving, real-time and batch processing.

Strong working knowledge of ML/AI operationalization: model deployment, inference optimization, feature stores, monitoring, and retraining workflows.

Experience with third-party API integrations at scale (OAuth 2.0, webhooks, data normalization across heterogeneous schemas).

Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, including managing external development vendors.

Startup DNA: you’ve been an early-stage technical leader before and thrive in ambiguity, speed, and ownership.

Strongly Preferred

Demonstrated ability to build HIPAA-compliant systems (PHI handling, encryption, access controls, audit logging, BAAs).

Experience in digital health, health-tech, or regulated clinical software.

Familiarity with consumer health device ecosystems and their data APIs.

Experience building systems that operate within controlled or regulated medical workflows.

Strong product design sensibility and experience collaborating closely with designers (you'll be working with and weigh in hiring our first in-house product designer)

Hands-on proficiency with Python and modern backend frameworks (Node.js, Go, or similar), plus cloud-native infrastructure (AWS or GCP).

Experience building SaaS products with tiered commercial models and payment integrations.

Background in NLP or conversational AI.

Non-Negotiable: Mindset

You are mission-driven above all else. You chose this role because the problem matters to you personally — not because of the title, the equity, or the investor name on the cap table.

You believe technology should protect and guide people, not just measure them.

You're ready to commit fully to this. This isn't a stepping stone role. It's the kind of work you'll look back on as a defining chapter of your career.

You hold yourself to an extraordinarily high standard — because the people whose health depends on this platform deserve nothing less.

You are energized, not intimidated, by the idea of building regulated health systems from scratch under real time pressure with real human consequences.

The science behind this company is world-class. The problem it addresses touches every human being, every night. The market timing is extraordinary. And we are only at the beginning.

The Technical Landscape

While final stack decisions are yours to make, here is the scope of what the platform must accomplish
